Feeding your child's brain

Q: I have a very active seven-year-old child.

I saw this ad from Noah's Natural Foods from the maker of Natural Factors. It's called "Learning factors nutritional brain supplement for the mind". It says there it'll help kids focus in school and for those with behavioural problems.

All the ingredients seem safe and healthy. Do you think it's not addictive for children, or would you recommend it?

Signed, Brain Food

A: Dear Brain Food, I don't comment on specific brands especially because I don't have their ingredients list in front of me, but children do need supplements just like everybody else. Often children are just as stressed out as their parents. Research has shown children absorb stress that is present in their parents' lives and are affected by it as much as adults.

An active seven-year-old child may not need a wide variety of supplements, but a good children's multivitamin without additives and colour along with a clean fish oil supplement high in DHA*(Docosahexaenoic acid)would be highly beneficial.

EPA is another important long-chain omega-3 fatty acid. Initial research indicates that supplementation with both EPA and DHA may support respiratory health, including healthy bronchial smooth muscle function.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids may also support immune health in children.

In general, omega-3 fatty acids are well recognized for supporting cardiovascular function, emotional well being, and healthy skin and joints. These supplements would help any child dealing with a full agenda.
