The Kidney Stone - Emotion Connection

Q: Dear Elena: I have kidney stones and someone recently told me that they are lumps of unresolved anger. Is this true?

A: The kidney acts as a filter for blood, making urine and removing waste products from the body. It also helps regulate electrolyte levels that are important for body function.

Chemicals can crystallize in the urine and form the beginning of a kidney stone. These stones are very tiny, smaller than a grain of sand, but gradually can grow over time to a 1/10 of an inch or larger. When a stone sits in the kidney, it rarely causes problems, but when it falls into the ureter, it acts like a dam. As the kidney continues to function and make urine, pressure builds up behind the stone and causes the kidney to swell, which causes pain. When the stone enters the bladder, the obstruction in the ureter is relieved and the symptoms of a kidney stone are resolved.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) anger is frequently associated with heat build up and often affects the liver. It is thought that the kidneys hold the life force energy and certain emotions relate to this organ system. If your stress state includes emotions like fear, dread, bad memories, and impending doom, you may be stressing your kidneys. In Western terms it can be described as an inflammatory event and that can be successfully treated. I often use kidney drainage herbs such as Juniper extracts, Berberis and the like. Mixtures of herbal and homeopathic dilutions work the best. Guna homeopathic kidney remedies are especially useful because they combine traditional and modern homeopathy. Diet and stress management are always important.
