Healing Bursitis

Q: Dear Elena, I am a 60 year old female and have been dealing with fluid in the form of a bursa on my knee cap for over a year. My doctor tells me it will just go away, but I am sick of waiting!

Can you help?

Signed, Swollen

A: Prepatellar bursitis, also known as housemaid's knee, is a common cause of swelling and pain on top of the kneecap. The name "housemaid's knee" comes from the association of this condition with individuals whose work necessitates kneeling for extended periods of time. Prepatellar bursitis is common in professions such as carpet layers and gardeners.

Your doctor is right about it going away on is own but only if you don't continue to aggravate the area. You should not be doing anything that will put pressure on the affected knee. Often I use homeopathic drainage remedies that would help remove the fluid faster. I like to use some combination of lymphatic drainage and an anti-inflammatory formula such as Traumeel. It can be used orally as well as topically on the affected area. Further, a mixture of anti-inflammatory herbs such as Curcumin and Boswellia should be added to speed things along. I prefer to use Wobenzyme PS ( professional Strength) if the patient doesn't have any stomach ulcers or sensitivities. It works excellent for any kind of inflammation. It is also a good idea to add an Omega 3 oil supplement. Fish oil will also work as an anti-inflammatory supplement.
