Fish Oils are Vital for Heart and Brain Health

Q: Dear Elena: I have been taking fish oils for over a year now. Although I am seeing a difference in my skin, hair and digestion, I am worried that I may be getting too much mercury. How do I know? What ways can I eliminate mercury from my body?

A: Dietary sources of omega-3 fatty acids include fish oil and certain plant/nut oils. Fish oil contains both docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), while some nuts (English walnuts) and vegetable oils (soybean, flaxseed/linseed, olive) contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

There is evidence from many studies supporting intake of recommended amounts of DHA and EPA in the form of dietary fish or fish oil. These supplements lower triglycerides, reduce the risk of heart attack, dangerous abnormal heart rhythms, and strokes in people with known cardiovascular disease. It does this by slowing the buildup of atherosclerotic plaques ("hardening of the arteries"), and lowers blood pressure. A lack of EFA's has been implicated in the development of ADHD, depression and anxiety.

You don't need to worry about mercury in fish oil because all good, reputable brands remove all contaminants before they are released into the market. Proper manufacturing practices involve molecular distillation of an oil and an after treatment check for any environmental contaminants. You just need to make sure the oil you are buying is of the highest quality.

When eating fish, stick to the smaller variety. Larger fish have higher amounts of toxins, including mercury. Species such as tuna and swordfish are the highest in mercury contamination; however sardines and the like are fairly safe to eat.

If you are worried about body levels of mercury, it is easily checked. I test all my patients for heavy metal toxicity especially mercury, arsenic, aluminum and lead. Various means can be used. I frequently use blood test and hair analysis. Urine test can also b easily done.

If it turns out you have heavy metal accumulation, various means of treatment are available. I use chelation both oral and intravenous most often. You can also detoxify using different foods and by sweating it out in an infrared sauna.
