Changing Shape

Q: Dear Elena: I would like to know if there are any quick ways to kick start your metabolism? I am a 38 year old woman who has never been thin, but I am not overweight either. I am active and try to make healthy choices, but I can't seem to change the shape I have been for years.

A: To kick-start a sluggish metabolism I always start with a tissue detoxification program. Assuming you are healthy and don’t have any issues with you thyroid, a gentile cleanse of lymphatic system, liver and kidneys can go a long way. Often the body is congested and water accumulation occurs in the spaces between cells called interstitial space.  Excess toxins can also accumulate inside the cells in the intrastitial spaces. Both can lead to appearance of puffiness, congestion, increased weight and increased inches in all the wrong spaces. Cellulite is often a dysfunction of the lymphatic system and not just fat deposits.

Getting rid of fluid can be a quick and easy way to loose some inches. A bloated stomach frequently adds to the hopeless feeling of not being able to lose weight. I advise my patients to cut out you wheat and yeast, dairy and alcohol for about 10 days and this helps to drop some initial weight quickly and easily.

Changing shape is always a lot more difficult then changing total weight. Shape seems to be genetically predisposed. You tend to gain weight in all the same places as your mother (most often) and it is always the last weight to go when you loose weight in general.

The way to overcome that is to do some Mesotherapy treatments. It is a technique developed in France that is used to promote lymphatic drainage in specific "hard to reach" places. It is done using intradermal microinjections of vitamins, minerals and other natural extracts to promote loss of inches in the areas being treated. It is not a weight loss procedure but rather a sculpting one. Injections are done in areas of concern only. After about 10 treatments, the effect can be quiet spectacular. I offer this service at my clinic and have seen dramatic results.
